Although improvements in preventive dentistry have made tooth loss less common, patients who experience trauma, extensive tooth decay, or periodontal disease may still lose one of several of their teeth. The way tooth loss is treated has changed considerably in the last few decades with the advent of dental implants. These titanium cylinders, which replace natural tooth roots not only give you a great-looking smile, but prevent numerous oral health issues that often accompany the loss of teeth. Austin Smile Creations supports the health and appearance of your smile by providing dental implants in Austin, Texas.
Why Replace Missing Teeth with Implants?
Missing teeth cause more than a cosmetic problem for your smile. When a tooth is lost or extracted, the remaining teeth can drift toward the gap. This process can lead to a number of issues, including:
• Crooked teeth
• Bite misalignment
• Teeth grinding
Daily functions such as eating and speaking can suffer as your dentition changes, and you may develop a painful condition of the jaw joints known as TMJ disorder. Furthermore, the bone beneath the lost tooth will deteriorate over time, making your face appear prematurely aged. Dentures and fixed dental bridges can fill in gaps caused by missing teeth and prevent tooth drifting, but only dental implants provide the stimulation that the jawbone needs to remain healthy.

The Implant Placement Process
During implant surgery, Dr. Gotun takes the following steps:
1.) Using 3D images as a guide for precise placement, Dr. Gotun inserts the dental implant posts into bone. To ensure your comfort during treatment, Dr. Gotun applies a local anesthetic before placement. Downtime associated with implant surgery is minimal; you can even return to work the same day if you’d like. You will need to avoid hard, crunchy foods for a day or so while your gums heal.
After your implant has been placed, a process called osseointegration occurs, where jawbone bonds with the surface of the implant. This anchors the titanium screw for optimal stability.
2.) After osseointegration is complete, you will return our office so that Dr. Gotun can place attachment pieces, called abutments, on top of your implants. As a final step, we will place your custom-made restorations (crowns, bridges, or dentures) to the abutments, and you will walk out of our dental office with a healthy, brilliant smile.
In addition to traditional dental implants, Dr. Gotun offers mini dental implants and All-on-4 implant dentures to those who are good candidates. Mini implants are smaller in diameter than conventional implants, require considerably less healing time, and can be used for patients who have diminished bone health.
