What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are screws designed to replace the root of a tooth. They are surgically anchored in the jaw and then capped with a crown. Dental implants are meant to be permanent, natural looking and feeling replacements for missing teeth, and they do not require support from the adjacent teeth. They enable you to bite and chew food in a completely normal way and they also prevent shifting of the teeth by filling the spot of missing teeth. Dental implants can also be used to support prosthetic devices such as bridges or they can be used as a stabilizing element for overdentures. These applications can make a huge difference in how comfortable a denture wearer may feel smiling, laughing or eating in public.

Are You a Good Candidate For Dental Implants?

A thorough examination and a medical evaluation will determine if you are a good candidate or not. You should be healthy enough for the implant placement procedure and have sufficient bone structure and density for it to be possible. In some cases a bone graft surgery can be performed to replace missing bone and prepare for implant placement. You will be very carefully considered if you have medical or other conditions that may affect the healing process of bones and soft tissues, such as going through steroid therapy, having bone infections, being a smoker.

Whether you need one implant or several, the process is the same. First, you will go through thorough diagnostics, including Computer Tomography to be able to evaluate various treatment options. Then, there will be careful planning of the procedures in stages. We will make sure you will go through it with minimal discomfort and in a way that ensures the best results.

The advances in implant technology over the last couple of years have revolutionized the whole process and made it a very comfortable, minimally invasive, and allowing for faster and easier healing. It is significantly different from what it used to be, and it is now a much better, more predictable option for people healthy enough to receive implants. You should keep in mind, that you might need to address some urgent dental needs before the process begins, to achieve a healthy environment for the implants. Be aware, that the implant placement process will take at least 3-6 months to complete, and you should be committed to regular dental hygiene visits to protect your investment.
